Project Kitchen PC
Finished: November 22, 2003

Accessories

When the project was almost finished I added a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). As we were not going to turn this PC off, UPS makes us sure that if power loss happens, the PC will shut down properly.

I chose Smart UPS 420 by APC. It communicates with PC via standard serial (COM) port. It can be controlled by PC and it is possible to adjust the reaction of PC for "power loss" event. This UPS is capable to power the PC for about five minutes after power failure. I adjusted the PC to shut down after two minutes after power loss and then — shut down the UPS, to prolong battery life.

We also needed something to store CDs. I was looking for CD holder for a long time, but once I found suitable one.

It is made by Hama (Germany) — only metal and gray metallic paint. It suited our PC stand perfectly. It can be used horizontally or vertically. Perfectly designed! Unfortunately I failed to find the same for DVDs.

The last thing that I included in this project is speakers. Could you imagine TV/FM/MP3/DVD player without speakers? Me neither. So, after reading different articles in the Internet and walking through computer stores I chose Microlab Solo-2 stereo speakers.

I know, may be it is a bit out of fashion to buy two speaker acoustic system. But I was making a kitchen PC. It is not a home theatre system. But though these speakers are inexpensive, they produce quite good powerful sound.

After connecting all the cables the back panel of the PC looks like this:
